側向推進器分為可調(diào)螺距(CP)側向推進器和固定螺距(FP)側向推進器。原動機常用電動機，也可采用柴油機和液壓馬達驅(qū)動。
全回轉(zhuǎn)舵槳通過操縱舵槳轉(zhuǎn)舵機構使螺旋槳繞著垂直的中間立柱作360。任意方向回轉(zhuǎn)，集推進和操舵功能于一體，能使船舶在任何方向都能獲得較大的推力，可作船舶主、輔推進和動力定位。全回轉(zhuǎn)舵槳有三種安裝形式：艉機型、井座型和甲板機組型。原動機常用柴油機，也可采用電動機和液壓馬達驅(qū)動。
